LONDON (AP)—Michael Owen joined English champion Manchester United on Friday, a striking reversal of fortune for an injury-plagued forward who has been dropped from the national team by manager Fabio Capello.

The 29-year-old, who has 40 goals in 89 international appearances, signed a two-year contract. The former Liverpool and Real Madrid player was a free agent after his contract expired Tuesday at relegated Newcastle.

“I never though it in my wildest dreams really. When I got the call from the manager to come and meet him, it was a shock,” Owen said. “I know there will be a few people saying the manager shouldn’t have bought me.”

Owen’s agent had been so concerned about finding him a new club that he sent a 32-page brochure to teams around Europe trumpeting his enduring qualities and rebutting fitness fears.

United has watched Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez depart since losing the Champions League final to Barcelona.

“Michael is a world-class forward with a proven goal-scoring record at the highest level, and that has never been in question,” United manager Alex Ferguson said. “Coming to Manchester United with the expectations that we have is something that Michael will relish.”

Owen underwent stringent medical examinations on his troublesome right knee before the contract was signed.

“I’m sure a club like this can re-ignite my career,” Owen said. “I do not feel that I am injury prone.”

He scored 10 goals in 32 matches last season at Newcastle, which finished 18th at 7-18-13, and had 30 goals in 79 games since joining the club in 2005.

Florent Malouda had already given Chelsea a fourth minute lead as the Blues stayed third, three points behind Liverpool and seven behind Man United with only round of games to go.

Ryan Giggs finally voted player of the year at 35

LONDON (AP)—Manchester United stalwart Ryan Giggs has been voted player of the year by his fellow English league professionals for the first time at the age of the 35.

The top PFA accolade was the one prize that had eluded him since making his United debut in March 1991.

After receiving the award Sunday night, Giggs is now hoping to make his 800th appearance for the Premier League leaders in Wednesday’s Champions League semifinal first leg against Arsenal.

Despite his age, Giggs remains key to United’s quest for a quintuple this season. The team has already won the Club World Cup and League Cup, while still remaining on course to defend its English and European titles.

Giggs, who is contracted to the Red Devils until June 2010, has won 10 Premier League titles, two Champions League titles, four FA Cups and two League Cups—all with United.

“It’s right up there with personal accolades, it’s the best to have as it’s voted by your fellow players,” Giggs said at the London ceremony. “I’ve been fortunate to win a lot of trophies, I won the young player award twice, but this is the big one.”

Arsenal beat The Boro 2-0

LONDON (AP)—Cesc Fabregas scored his first goals in more than six months to give Arsenal a 2-0 win over Middlesbrough on Sunday.

Fabregas scored in the 26th minute following a slick move near halfway and again in the 67th for his first league goal since he headed in a late equalizer against Sunderland on Oct. 4.

“We made some brilliant passing today and some brilliant combinations,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. “Especially the first goal, I believe was absolutely outstanding.”

Arsenal extended its unbeaten run to 20 league games, not losing since a 3-0 defeat at Manchester City on Nov. 22. The Gunners are in fourth place with 65 points, and will try to narrow the six-point gap on third-place Chelsea in its remaining games to automatically qualify for the Champions League group stage next season.

Middlesbrough is in 18th place with 31 points, but could drop a place lower depending on the outcome of Monday’s match between Newcastle and Portsmouth. Newcastle needs only a draw to go ahead of Middlesbrough on goal difference.

Boro’s predicament worsened when Blackburn moved six points clear of the relegation zone with a 2-0 win over midtable Wigan.

Victory lifted Blackburn one place to 15th on 37 points, trailing Portsmouth only on goal difference.

Preview: Manchester United – Tottenham Hotspur

Manchester United are limping towards the finishing line, but the squad are determined to beat Tottenham Hotspur to ensure they get their hands on the Premier League trophy as quickly as possible.

The 2-0 mid-week victory over Portsmouth placed the Reds three points ahead of Liverpool with a game in hand after the Scouser’s epic 4-4 draw with Arsenal.

In spells, the attacking verve and vibrancy of previous years made a welcome re-appearance in a match which should have ended with a far greater disparity between the teams.

A Michael Carrick 82nd minute strike calmed any nerves of a sting in the tail from the South Coast side. If he and fellow former Spurs star Dimitar Berbatov can combine with the same lethal effect as the FA Cup meeting between the clubs in January, it will be a great help.
Poor finishing was again to blame for the low goal return, with Welsh veteran Ryan Giggs spurning several presentable chances. Such wastefulness will not suffice against this weekend’s opponents, who’ll provide a far sterner test than relegation threatened Pompey.

At the forefront of the United players’ mind is the importance of chalking up another win. Of the team’s six remaining fixtures, this is one where manager Sir Alex Ferguson will definitely highlight the importance of claiming all three points.

Much trickier fixtures at home to local rivals Manchester City and Arsenal await. Stumble on Saturday and the Red Devils could face an unwanted energy-sapping race to the wire with Liverpool for the Premier League title.

Spur’d on for Europa Push

From two points from the first eight games, to just one point from a place in Europe, Tottenham Hotspur’s season has been a rollercoaster ride.

Last weekend’s 1-0 victory over Newcastle United cemented Spurs position in the leading pack in the race to claim entry to the inaugural Europa League competition next season.

Few would have predicted in the Autumn that the Londoners would travel to Manchester in such rude health.

The Lilywhites have been beaten only three times in the Premier League in 2009, with this new found solidarity providing the foundations for the club’s rise up the table.

Croatian magician Luka Modric has thrived under the tutelage of manager Harry Redknapp, while English fire-bolt Aaron Lennon has burned a path down the wing with his lightning speed.

A defence with as many holes in it as a block of Swiss cheese has now kept clean sheets in half of its last ten fixtures. Such resolve will be needed at Old Trafford if the Premier League champions are to be denied.

Unfortunately for the resurgent White Hart Lane outfit, trips to the North West have provided the rare dark spots in the Redknapp revival. The losses since the turn of the year have all come during trips to the region, with the latest coming at the hands of Blackburn Rovers three weeks ago.

If Spurs manage to tear up the form book on Saturday, their rollercoaster of a season could be just a few twists away from ending on a positive note.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Manchester United: When the Red Devils’ form hit the buffers, so did Patrice Evra’s. Aaron Lennon murdered him in the Carling Cup final, with the England winger sprinting past him with impunity. Evra must banish this performance to the past if Spurs aren’t to spring an upset from their right flank.

Tottenham Hotspur: It’s hard to find a better defender than Ledley King. His imperious performances on the rare occasions he is fit are a sight to behold for footballing purists. King has kept United at bay before, and will need to do so again if Spurs are to continue their push for Europe.

PREDICTION

Harry Redknapp brings his Tottenham Hotspur team up north with a real chance of adding to his excellent personal record against Sir Alex Ferguson.

A semblance of normality has resumed at Old Trafford in recent weeks though, and they will have just enough to claim the three points in what should be an engaging contest.

Fergie Tired Of United's Soft Side

Sir Alex Ferguson has dismissed talk of tiredness affecting Manchester United and instead told his team to stop conceding stupid goals.

After a two-match losing streak, Ferguson must have felt United were back on the march again with their last-minute winner against Aston Villa last weekend.

Yet only 48 hours later they found their Champions League defence hanging by a thread following Porto's late equaliser at Old Trafford.

Most pundits felt the Red Devils looked jaded, a situation unlikely to change ahead of next Wednesday's second leg given the number of injuries Ferguson's side are carrying.

However, the United boss does not believe the evidence backs up such a theory. All he feels the Old Trafford outfit need is a more solid defence.

"Some people said we looked tired on Tuesday," reflected Ferguson.

"We looked tired in the first half and were short of sharpness and rhythm in our game.

"But we did well in the second. There is nothing wrong there. We just have to stop these silly goals."

Conceding soft goals is a virus that dates back to the home defeat by Liverpool a month ago.

In the four games from that point, Edwin van der Sar has been beaten 10 times - the same number of goals United had conceded in the previous 22 matches.

Particularly galling was Porto's late equaliser on Tuesday after Wayne Rooney had dragged his team-mates back into a game they trailed from the opening minutes.

"There is a watershed for everything," said Ferguson.

"Hopefully we reached it on Tuesday night because that late goal was a real kick in the teeth."

At least, after playing two games in three days, United have had more time to prepare for Saturday's trip to Sunderland.

They also have a four-day preparation for the return leg against Porto and equal time to get themselves sorted for Sunday's FA Cup semi-final with Everton at Wembley.

"The spacing of our games has been terrible," said Ferguson.

"I have to hold my hands up because we did not give the players the best preparation for Tuesday.

"But we were stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea.

"We had the option of playing on Saturday lunchtime, which was not the best in terms of preparation for Villa. But playing on Sunday was not the best for Tuesday. We have been caught in that way."

The one consolation Ferguson can draw from a difficult period is his side managed to avoid defeat.

By common agreement, Villa and Porto dominated the first half of both games. Yet United emerged with a win that kept their noses in front of Liverpool in the Premier League and a draw that gives them some chance of progressing to the Champions League semi-finals for the third successive year.

"If you don't have character, you get yourself into situations where you might find yourself wanting," said Ferguson.

"Fortunately there is a good competitive nature at this club.

"The fact we have been winning for the last few seasons gives them an in-born character to try and get out of the situation they found themselves in last Sunday.

"They are comfortable in these areas. It is not an accident they keep getting out of them. It has happened too many times."

Ferguson could do with a few of his squad back pretty quickly.

A groin injury threatens to keep Jonny Evans out tomorrow, so John O'Shea will start in central defence and Gary Neville at right-back, reversing the positions that proved so disastrous against Villa.

There is a glimmer of light, though, as Rio Ferdinand, Rafael da Silva and Wes Brown could all return at some stage in the next fortnight, even if Ferdinand is the only one who could be fit for next week's trip to Portugal.

Last weekend's hero, Federico Macheda, will probably remain on the bench at the Stadium of Light.

Transfers - Gossip Shop: Chelsea eye Pav

With David Villa's apparent lack of interest in a summer move to Chelsea, the Blues could instead turn their attentions to Tottenham striker Roman Pavlyuchenko.
At least that is what Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink would do, job situation permitting, of course.

Hiddink knows the Russian well from coaching him at international level - where Pavlyuchenko actually plays regularly - and simply cannot believe a man of his talents has not been given a decent run in the team by Spurs boss Harry Redknapp.

"It's a pity he's left in reserve," Hiddink said in The Sun. "I'd never do that. A talented player like Roman must play, play and play again. He would prove useful to Chelsea."

But before Nicolas Anelka loses too much sleep over the prospect of demotion in the Stamford Bridge pecking order, let us not forget that as things stand, the official line remains that Hiddink is only with Chelsea until the summer.

So the Dutchman can say what he likes now, but once the transfer window opens, he will hold no sway whatsoever on Chelsea's transfer policy and his words will count for nothing.

That's not to say that Pavlyuchenko will not leave for somewhere else anyway, as it becomes increasingly apparent that Redknapp is looking to trim his squad by offloading several fringe players.

Along with Pavlyuchenko, Tom Huddlestone and Gareth Bale seem to be prime candidates to try their luck elsewhere.

Neither has started a game since Spurs were knocked out of the UEFA Cup by Shakhtar Donetsk six weeks ago and as everybody knows, if a footballer wants just one thing, it is to play football.

Unless, of course, his name is Adriano, in which case he just wants to laze about on a beach during the day and party all night long. But that's another story.

Fulham are interested in both Huddlestone and Bale, and Redknapp could be tempted to part with the pair of them, despite having compared the former to the once great Glenn Hoddle.

"I understand his frustration," Redknapp said. "Tom has fantastic playing ability like Glenn Hoddle and the ability to be a top player.

"But he needs to take the game by the scruff of the neck more, to boss a game. He has to keep getting the ball and sometimes he does not demand the ball enough. I have told him that."

And Fraizer Campbell will leave White Hart Lane with his parent club Manchester United indicating they want to secure his long-term future at Old Trafford.

Campbell has impressed since arriving in north London on loan as part of the deal that took Dimitar Berbatov to United, prompting interest from Hull City and Wigan.

But Alex Ferguson is a big fan of the England U21 striker - whose current contract with the champions expires at the end of next season - and wants to tie him down with a new improved deal.

And finally, having finally proved that young Brazilians can prosper at United, Ferguson is keen on bringing another youngster, Douglas Costa, to Old Trafford.

While the signing of Kleberson was a misjudgement and the jury remains out on Anderson's worth, the signing of Rafael Da Silva (and possibly his brother Fabio and Rodrigo Possebon too) has vindicated Fergie's dabblings in Brazil.

Midfielder Costa, 18, has unfortunately already been dubbed 'the new Ronaldinho' but while that has undoubtedly added a few noughts on his price tag, United's South American scout Jaap Stam has been suitably impressed.

Villarreal recently had an £8m bid turned down by Costa's club Gremio, allowing United, Liverpool, Internazionale, Real Madrid and any other club that should care to enter a bidding war fight it out for the youngster's services.
